Help with Tabber

Tabber is made by one person. Write to me directly and you'll get a real reply — usually within a few days.

Email support Kyle Thornton, developer of Tabber. Bug reports, feature requests, and “this didn't work” messages are all welcome.

Compatibility

Tabber is an iPhone app. There is no iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Android version.

  • iOS 26 or later is required. Tabber uses frameworks that don't exist on earlier versions.
  • Scanning and plain-English assignment need an Apple Intelligence–capable iPhone — that means iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or newer, with Apple Intelligence enabled in iOS Settings.
  • Every other iPhone on iOS 26 can still use Tabber through manual entry — you type the items instead of photographing them, and everything after that works identically, including the split math and saved tabs.
  • No internet connection is needed. Tabber works in airplane mode.

Frequently asked

Getting started

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no email address to verify, and no password. Tabber asks for your first name once, on first launch, so that “I” and “me” in your description resolve to you. That name is stored only on your iPhone and can be changed in Settings at any time.

What does Tabber cost?

Version 1.0 is free to download, with no subscription, no advertising, and no in-app purchases. Because all the intelligence runs on your own device, there are no server bills to cover.

Does it work without a signal?

Yes, completely. Reading the receipt, understanding your description, and working out the totals all happen on the iPhone. The core flow makes no network requests at all, which is handy in exactly the kind of basement restaurant where you most need it.

Splitting a bill

What am I supposed to say?

Whatever you'd say to a friend. “Sarah had the salmon, John and I split the calamari, Mike's getting his own tab” is a normal input. So is “I had the burger, everything else is Priya's.”

You don't need to add people first — names in your sentence become people automatically. You don't need to cover everything in one go either; say some of it, then say the rest.

It put an item on the wrong person. How do I fix it?

Tap the item and reassign it. Nothing is final until you finish the split, and the summary screen is editable too.

You can also just say the correction — Tabber keeps the thread of the conversation, so “no, the calamari was Mike” does what you'd expect.

Some items weren't assigned to anyone.

That's expected and not an error — it happens whenever a description doesn't cover every line. Unassigned items stay visible on the assign screen, and you can either mention them in another sentence or tap to assign them by hand.

Tabber deliberately leaves an item unassigned rather than guessing at it. A missing assignment takes one tap to fix; a wrong one is wrong money.

Someone at the table wasn't mentioned in my sentence.

Use + Add person on the assign screen to seat them by hand, then assign their items as normal.

We split something unevenly.

Shared items divide evenly by default, but the split can be weighted — useful when one person had rather more of the bottle than everyone else. A shared item shows as a single line spanning everyone on it, not as duplicates.

Does Tabber remember people between meals?

Yes. Anyone you split a bill with is remembered individually, so mentioning their name next time matches them to the same person. New names are filed quietly when you save the tab — which means a mis-heard name you correct on the spot never becomes a permanent person, and an abandoned split leaves nothing behind.

Remembered people are listed in Settings, where they can be renamed, merged, or deleted. There are no saved groups; people are always remembered individually.

The math

How are tax and tip divided?

Proportionally, by each person's share of the subtotal — never split flat across heads. If your food came to a quarter of the subtotal, you pay a quarter of the tax and a quarter of the tip.

The default tip percentage and whether tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total are both set in Settings. The percentage can also be changed on any individual tab, on the review screen.

Do the per-person amounts add up to the receipt total?

Always, to the cent. Everything is calculated in whole cents, and any rounding remainder is assigned to the largest payer so the column sums exactly to the printed total. Each person's own itemised lines also add up to the figure shown at the top of their card.

Does the AI do the arithmetic?

No, and that's deliberate. The on-device model reads the receipt and works out who had what; every calculation after that is ordinary code. Language models are unreliable at arithmetic, so none of the money math is left to one.

Privacy

Is my receipt uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is read on your iPhone and never transmitted. There is no server to send it to — Tabber has no backend at all. The privacy policy covers this in full.

Is my voice recorded?

No audio is saved, and none is sent anywhere. Speech recognition is configured to run on the device only; the microphone is open only while you're actively dictating, and what comes out is text on your screen that you can edit before anything happens with it.

How do I delete my data?

Settings gives you three levels: delete all stored receipt photos (keeping the tabs themselves), delete an individual tab by swiping it away on the home screen, or “Reset account” to erase every tab, person, and preference at once.

You can also set photos to age out automatically after 30 days, or never to be stored in the first place. Deleting the app removes everything with it.

Troubleshooting

The scan read my receipt wrong

Receipt printing is genuinely hard to read — faded thermal paper, odd abbreviations, and creases all make a difference. A few things help:

  • Flatten the receipt and lay it on a contrasting surface
  • Get the whole receipt in frame, including the totals at the bottom
  • Avoid a hard shadow falling across the middle of it
  • Check the review screen before continuing — every line is editable, and anything Tabber couldn't reconcile against the printed subtotal is flagged for you

If a receipt is beyond saving, switch to manual entry and type the items. It's faster than fighting with the camera.

Tabber says this iPhone can't read receipts

That message means the device doesn't support the on-device models Tabber needs — it requires iPhone 15 Pro or newer with Apple Intelligence enabled. Check Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri on your iPhone; if it's available but switched off, turning it on enables scanning.

On hardware that genuinely can't run it, manual entry gives you the same tabs and the same math.

Dictation isn't picking anything up

Check that both Microphone and Speech Recognition are allowed for Tabber in Settings → Tabber on your iPhone. Restaurants are loud, and the recogniser does better if you hold the phone a bit closer and speak at a normal conversational pace rather than shouting. Typing the same sentence always works as a fallback.

The first scan took a while

The on-device model has to be loaded the first time you use it after launching. Subsequent scans in the same session are quicker.

Reporting a bug

Please do — it's the fastest way for something to get fixed. A useful report includes:

  • Your iPhone model and iOS version (Settings → General → About)
  • The Tabber version, from Settings → About Tabber
  • What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
  • A screenshot if the problem is something you can see

If you want to send a receipt photo that Tabber struggled with, that's genuinely helpful — but please redact anything you'd rather not share, such as the last digits of a card number or a signature. Tabber never sends me anything on its own, so I only ever see what you deliberately attach to an email.

What's coming

Two payment shortcuts are planned for a future release: sending a Venmo request, and requesting money through Apple Cash in Messages. Both will work by handing a prefilled request to that app on your device — Tabber won't be contacting any payment service itself. Per-person Venmo usernames can already be stored in Settings in preparation.

If there's something else you want, say so. A one-person app can take requests.
